But like the glass roof of a greenhouse, these gases prevent the resulting heat from escaping which is useful since life forms require warmth for living.
If more greenhouse gases are release into the atmosphere, more heat is retaine near the Earth’s surface. The net result is that the Earth warms up considerably.

Earth’s temperature is increasing every year. It has been predicts that in the coming decades, Earth’s mean temperature will increase substantially.
Greenhouse gases are produce both by industrial and biological processes, but while industrial emissions are fairly well document, knowledge of the production rates of greenhouse gases through biological processes and the factors regulating emissions is still inadequate.
The greenhouse contribution of carbon oxide is highest and is up to 50 per cent. The greenhouse role of carbon dioxide and trace gases must be consider seriously.
Impacts of Greenhouse Effect
Greenhouse gases are responsible for trapping the solar energy. These gases helped in raising the Earth’s mean temperature from-15ºC to today’s 15ºC.
Without the greenhouse effect our planet would not have been a habitable place. However, any further increase in the greenhouse gases would affect the global temperature drastically.
Greenhouse role of trace gases
Beside carbon dioxide, important trace gases, which contribute to the greenhouse effect, are methane, nitrous oxide, ozone and chlorofluorocarbons.
The greenhouse role of these gases is also significant, one molecule of chlorofluorocarbons can have the same greenhouse effect as the addition of 10³ molecules of carbons dioxide in the atmosphere would be created.
Role of carbon dioxide
Carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere is about 356ppm. Around the year 1880s, its concemtration is approximately 280ppm. There has been an increase of almost 25 per cent as compared to the pre-industrial times. Accurate measurement of global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is available only since 1958 but they indicate a marked increase in carbon dioxide concentration since then.
